How to Hang Drapes to Make a Room Look Larger

There is nothing like drapery to make a room feel complete. Using special hanging techniques can also make a room feel taller, wider, and even more elegant.

If drapery is installed properly, it will enhance the space. A great professional installer is the interior designer's secret weapon.

1. How High Should You Place Your Curtain Rod?

My preferred installation location for drapery and curtains is halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling. This method always looks fantastic. If a room has a short ceiling, I may make the decision to install the rod closer to the ceiling to give the room a more spacious feel.

Visually, your eye will naturally go up to the gorgeous rod and then take in the beauty of the fabric. There is nothing like stunning, quality fabric to help a room feel taller and more grand.

2. Where Should You Mount Brackets for Drapes?

When installing drapery, I will determine, based on the area around the window, how far to span on each side. Industry standard is at least 4 inches. I will often go out even further than that, if possible, to keep the curtains out of the window view and to close off any possible light gap.

The mounting technique used can visually widen the appearance of the window, making the room feel brighter and more spacious.

3. How Long Should Your Curtains Be?

Clients often ask me what the proper length is for curtains or drapes? I like for the panels to be 1/2 an inch off the floor. Once the fabric hangs out and settles, it will end up barely skimming the ground. I have had a few clients want their drapes to puddle. This look is often not practical since most of our clients have families or pets. Puddling drapes are hard to keep clean and often that affects how the drapes dress out.

There are so many skills that go into making and hanging gorgeous drapery. It starts with a designer who will help you select the appropriate fabric, continues with an excellent seamstress who brings the dream to life, and then finishes with a professional installer who can get the look just right. Our team has been producing excellent drapery treatments since 2003. Experience is important as well.

The little details matter when selling a home and increasing the perceived value of a space. Quality window treatments help you enjoy life now and maximize profit down the road when you go to sell.
