How to Achieve Airy Elegance with Window Treatments
Not everyone needs window treatments for privacy, but that doesn't mean you should leave your windows bare. In fact, adding simple and tasteful drapery will make every room in your home feel "put together" and well-designed without requiring massive amounts of effort on your part.
...but is drapery alone enough? Your window treatment options are endless due to the many ways we can layer various treatments (e.g. drapery over Roman shades) and add accessories. Today, we're focusing on how you can layer drapery with other window treatment styles to create a fully custom look.
Choose your Drapery Style
Not all drapery is created equal. Do you prefer sheer or linen? Silk or cotton? Do you need blackout lining? These are questions that must be answered when choosing a fabric type for your window treatments. From there, you will need to determine a color, pattern (if any), and length that suits your space. Some people prefer their drapery to pool elegantly on the floor while others want the hems of the drapery panels to barely touch the floor (both of which require very precise measuring skills, by the way).
Pro Tip: Work with a designer or window treatment specialist who can measure your windows and provide fabric/color consultation.
Add a Layer of Blinds or Shades
Blinds and shades are a great way to maintain control of both your light and privacy needs. They also act as barriers for drafty windows. During this stage of the decision process, you'll need to determine whether you want to use blinds (traditional white blinds, faux wood or authentic wood materials) or shades (woven, fabric, Roman, etc).
The beauty of layering blinds or shades under drapery is that your windows will have full functionality and only block out the light or prying eyes when you want them to, which means you get to enjoy the view from your windows as much as you want.
Pro Tip: If you're putting blinds in the bathroom, choose faux wood. It withstands moisture while also adding a natural texture to the space.
