We are in Texas, ya'll. We can dream of a white Christmas…but it probably won’t happen here. That doesn’t mean we can’t still have a perfect winter day during the holidays, however.
My family likes to light a fire in the fireplace on the 5 days a year it is cold enough, and put on sappy Christmas movies. My husband is the one who likes these, my son and I not so much. We all mostly enjoy the slower pace of the season. How about you?
Window treatments are like a picture frame for the beauty outside your windows. The look is a cozy contrast to the chill outside. If you line and layer properly, the treatment will also do its job in the dead heat of the summer.
Here are my top five picks for window treatment combinations that are both beautiful as well as warm and inviting on those brisk autumn or cold winter days…
1. Layer Linen Curtains with Sheer Curtains
I have noticed that what used to be considered our grandmother's traversing drapery is coming back. The classic top drape with a sheer under drape is being requested more than I have seen in my 17 years in working with custom window treatments.
The sheers filter light and the top drape will block out light all together. It is also a very elegant and timeless look.
I love the look of the layered linen top drape with the sheer under drape because it is also so functional here in Texas to filter the sun at certain times of day and then block out the heat or cold when fully closed.
2. Combine Curtains with Roller Shades
Another look that works well to create a cozy look all year long is layering simple curtains over roller shades. This keeps the look current and a little more contemporary while being practical and pretty.
I have used both traversing drapery and a combination of roller shades and curtains in my own home. I love mixing up various combinations depending on the use and look of the room.
3. Select Sheer Roman Shades with Blackout Curtains
Did you know there are sheer roman shades available? Selecting a sheer roman shade with blackout drapery. The sheer roman shade will filter light without blocking it during the day. Close the curtains for complete privacy at night.
I love the fact the sheer roman shades allow for a little more privacy than a window without a covering.
4. Blend Blinds with Curtains
If you find yourself more on a budget, blending traditional blinds with curtains is always a good solution. Wood and faux wood blinds are functional as well as economical. This will give you more room in your budget to add some pretty curtains.
The blinds layered with curtains will give your window a pulled together, finished look.
5. Choose Curtains with Shutters
Another popular window covering combination in more traditional or southern style homes is layering your shutters with curtains.
The shutters will give you plenty of light control day and night. The curtains lend that added layer of warmth and luxury.
If you have been considering adding additional layers to the windows in your home for that warm and cozy feel, we are experts at mixing it up and creating a custom look for your home.
